Seer by Miles-Johnston Seer by Miles-Johnston
Been way too long since I put some serious time and effort into digital work, so I've been working on this thing in my evenings over the past week. Hope you dig it :) I've uploaded the original full sizebecause I put way too much work into all the little textures to not share it haha.

This is a gorgeous painting, you are very skilled. That ear also, wow.

Now while I recognize that there is fantasy aspect to this image, I can't help but wonder why you choose to paint a woman with Caucasian skin tone and features, when the costume/clothes are clearly inspired by the Hindi and Arabic cultures? I'm sure it wasn't intentional or malicious...but as an artist I feel like representation is important and that no visual choice is meaningless. Since you know, that's the point of making an image : to display something.
And yeah, I don't necessarily want to start a an argument, just a conversation. Even if it's an unconscious choice or just the habit of painting white people, it might be interesting to think about it a little.
Peace.

I agree with everything you said...
people who get angry over your comment are ...clearly not very acknowledgeable of the effects of our very, very white washed culture today

I know right? Have you seen the gallery of one of the angry dudes replying to me? It's composed exclusively of portraits of pretty white thin women. Actually, the only portrait of a non-Caucasian person is titled "azn girl", I almost pissed myself laughing.

Caucasian people can't wear clothes from other cultures? Who is to say that's not the clothes of *her* culture? Sometimes the stereotypes are inside you, not the painting.

Let's also not forget that we live in a post-colonial era and this history affects us a lot more than you could think.

Yes you are right, you should get a grip and try to understand other realities that you may not understand because of your privilege.

Of course they can, but what I meant was that DeviantArt is so overwhelmingly white, even when it takes inspiration from other cultures it's to put it on white people. The user in a question is a white male from the UK, and the girl on this digital painting is white with a bindi.

My comment wasn't : "White people are NOT allowed to wear clothes from other cultures!" it was more along the lines of, "hey was it a conscious choice to paint a white girl in traditional Indian clothes" ?
Because yes as an artist you have to think about that stuff.

You are extremely talented and this is beautiful!  I really love your work.  One question: the bright marks (short lines) on the ear seem just a little too visible; more than they need to be.  Is there a reason why they weren't blended in just a little more?  I didn't see them until full-res on MacPro/retina.

Your skin tone, textures and contours are simply amazing.  She is stunning.  Is she real or imagined?  Did you work from a photo?

:wow: And wow, don't you have every reason to put the original fullsize of this, it's an amazing painting. The character looks so real thanks to the realistic blends of colors and textures you've used, it's breathtakingly beautiful and well-executed. It really looks like a master painter just from its level of skill and the overall feel. Amazing!

This might seem like such a random thing to praise (people always talk about eyes, nose, mouth)..... but I love that ear!

Your artwork makes want to get better at using colors. I'm always so scared of over-saturating or just making a giant ugly mess, that I tend to lean to grays to play it safe.

The age of the ear is upon us! Colour is indeed pretty tricky but if your values are tight you can get away with a lot. Try taking paintings with colours you find interesting and looking at them in black and white, sometimes you notice pretty interesting things happening :)

This is incredibly detailed and amazingly beautiful! What a painting! I love the classical look of it, with a slight "alien" or "otherworldly" vibe to it due to the blue lipstick and the black around the eyes. Her expression is definitely evocative of someone who has seen things no one else has... which, for a seer, is as it should be. Very cool and elegant choices for jewelry for her too! I myself have blue lipstick that recently has become one of my favorite shades to wear when I am in the mood for a more "otherworldly" look... so this is cool for bringing that to my mind too. So many things that are awesome about this image, and so many reasons to like it! Definitely must add it to my favorites. :)

Hahah, when you're deeply invested in work you tend to stop paying attention to how much time it takes.
